Mid-Missouri Telephone Company Literacy ProgramMid-Missouri Telephone Company has teamed with KCLR Clear 99 of the Zimmer Radio Group to launch a reading and literacy program in cooperation with elementary schools in the Mid-Missouri Telephone Company local service area.Scotty Cox, a morning on-air personality with Clear 99, and Amy Jackson, Director of Marketing with Mid-Missouri Telephone Company, have been visiting schools teaching students about the importance of learning how to read. The book “Don’t Wake Up Momma” by Eileen Christelow is read by Cox to the student in the rural classrooms. Students are encouraged to participate in this interactive book as they listen to how ten little monkeys quietly make Momma a birthday cake. Students get to join in by saying “Shh, Don’t Wake Up Momma” when prompted. The program concludes with Cox and Jackson speaking about how reading is important in their jobs and what books and magazines they like to read for fun. Jackson talks about how learning how to read can help you to look up friends’ phone numbers in the telephone directory, which is another important book to know how to read. Students are encouraged to talk about what books they enjoy to read. All students receive a Mid-Missouri Telephone Company Literacy Program bookmark, pencil and Clear 99 small American flag. Since the first week of September 2002, Cox and Jackson have visited elementary schools at Pilot Grove, Bunceton, Blackwater, Zion Luteran, Hardeman, Gilliam, Orearville, High Point, Miami, and Latham.
